2009 Wimbledon
The 2009 Wimbledon Championships once again saw the world’s elite tennis players descend on the famed postcode of SW19 in order to decide who would be crowned the best in the world on grass.
In the men’s tournament, the clear favourite was Roger Federer, who was left almost unopposed in terms of skill after reigning Champion Rafael Nadal was forced to pull out with a knee injury. However, despite Federer being regarded as a near certainty for the title, the local crowds were still hoping that Scottish player Andy Murray could become the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936.
On the women’s side of the tournament the emphasis was once again on the rest of the field to break the dominance of the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, who have a combined score of eight Wimbledon Championships. Unfortunately, once again the women’s Wimbledon final became the Williams sisters’ show, with 2009 seeing Serena triumph over her older sister Venus.
On the men’s side, although Andy Murray came close to reaching the final he eventually lost out to the American Andy Rodick. Heading into the final, Federer was considered a huge favourite against Rodick. However, the American made a gallant effort and put up a stubborn enough fight to make the final the longest in Wimbledon’s history. At the end Federer came out on top and was able to secure his sixth Wimbledon title and record breaking 15th Grand Slam victory.
