Wimbledon 2011 Qualification underway in Roehampton
The Championships, 2011, are imminent – starting off with the qualifying event in Roehampton (London) at the Bank of England Sports Grounds. Play began at 11am this morning with a number of UK & Ireland hopefuls hoping to win one of the elusive 16 remaining spots for Wimbledon 2011.128 men and 128 women are all competing for only 16 spots in the main draw of the Men’s Singles and Ladies’ Singles and spots in the doubles competitions. Spectators are welcome!
Players of note at today’s qualifications include Conor Niland (Ireland), 2010 junior champion Marton Fucsovics (Hungary), and Alex Bogdanovic (UK) all in action in the opening round of matches.
A number of tennis legends that have gained entry into Wimbledon via the qualifying round include John “you can not be serious” McEnroe, (finalist in the 1977 Wimbledon semi-final) and Boris Becker in 1984 (aged 16) as well as Czech Jana Novotna in 1986.
