Wimbledon Ladies Legends

submit to reddit

Since the advent of the ‘open’ era of tennis in 1968, the top female players in the world have used Wimbledon to show off their supreme skill. While looking at the women’s winners list, it is easy to see just who has dominated at the championships.

The first player to earn her legendary status at Wimbledon was Billie Jean King, the female player that was so good she even took on the men. During her prime years between the early 1960’s and mid 1970’s, she won six singles titles along with 10 women’s doubles championships and four mixed doubles crowns. Even more impressive was the amount of time she was able to do it in, with her first Wimbledon trophy coming in 1961 and her last, as a mixed doubles runner-up, coming in 1983.

After Billie Jean King’s dominant era, women’s tennis at Wimbledon was then controlled by two legends of the game – Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf. Between the two ladies, with Navratilova coming first and Graf emerging ten years later, they won all but three Wimbledon Championships between 1978 and 1996. In total, Navratilova retired holding nine championships, along with 11 doubles trophies, while Graf picked up seven women’s singles championships. Much like her predecessor Billie Jean King, one of the most amazing feats of Navratilova’s career was the time frame in which she amassed her titles; her first silverware came in 1976 and her most recent was in 2003.
