Wimbledon Match Format

submit to reddit

The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship is a single elimination tournament, more commonly known as a ‘knockout’ tournament, where both seeded and unseeded players play each other for the right to progress to the next round and thus go on to play a tougher opponent.

All of the matches held at Wimbledon take part over either three of five sets, with the gentleman’s singles and doubles being contested over five, while the women’s and the mixed events take place over three. The matches take place in a ‘best of’ format, meaning that male competitors must secure victory in three sets of tennis to win, and the female competitors must win two sets to take the match.

Should a set of tennis result in a draw of six games apiece, then a tiebreak game is used to decide the set. However, if the draw occurs in the final set of a game – the 5th set for men and 3rd set for women – then play will continue until one competitor has a two game advantage. This essentially means that the first player to break their opponent’s serve and hold their own wins the match.

During each match played on either Centre Court or Court One, players are also allowed to use ‘Hawkeye‘ technology to challenge calls made by the umpire or line judges where they feel a ball may have been wrongly called ‘in’ or ‘out’. The players are allowed three incorrect challenges per set.
