Wimbledon Prizes & Trophies
Each year at Wimbledon prizes are handed out to the winners of the men’s singles and doubles, the women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles tournaments. Although the winners of the doubles events only receive a silver cup, and the runners up an inscribed silver plate along with their prize money, the two singles’ champions receive a much more fitting reward.
The winner of the men’s singles receives a silver gilt cup, which is around 47cm high and 19cm wide. The trophy is the same one that has been handed to the winner since the inaugural tournament in 1877, and is inscribed with the words ‘The All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Champion Of The World.’ Needless to say, being such a famous trophy the winner only gets to take home a replica.
The women’s singles champion at Wimbledon is presented with a large silver salver, which is commonly known as the ‘Venus Rosewater Dish’. This salver is highly decorated, painstakingly inscribed with figures from mythology, and once again the winner is only allowed to take home a replica. Both of these trophies are whenever possible presented to the champions by the head of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, The Duke of Kent.
Along with their replica trophies, both of the single’s champions will take home an equal amount of prize money. For the 2010 competition this is expected to be £1,000,000 per winner.
